A Berkshire Hathaway company has acquired Portland's Benson Industries.
Executives at MiTek Industries announced the deal on Wednesday, saying Benson will become a standalone subsidiary. Founded in 1926, Benson designs and constructs glass-and-metal curtain walls -- essentially high-rise building facades.
Benson's work covers much of downtown Portland and skyscrapers throughout the world. The company has gained national attention in recent years for its work on the rebuilt World Trade Center towers in New York.
Missouri-based MiTek is a construction-industry supplier of equipment, software and services.
Benson's top managers, including chief executive Lou Niles and chief operating officer Joe Aholt, will stay on at the company. It is headquartered on Northwest Naito Parkway with warehouses in Gresham. The company employs hundreds, depending on current contracts.
Niles, a former majority owner, said in a news release that MiTek and Berkshire's backing will help Benson grow.
He told The Oregonian in 2011 that Benson had annual revenues between $150 million and $225 million. Neither he nor a MiTek spokesman have yet returned calls to comment about the acquisition and the purchase price.
